Fantastic, magnificent location really close to main train station, agora and bazar, great places to eat right by the sea and Kordon nightlife and sea promenade...

I stayed here for a trip and would definitely come back. I had standard double room which was recently renovated, exceptionally comfortable bed. A good sized balcony, free wireless internet, and a mini-fridge turned out to be good.
Didn't like the area, it was not great.

Exceptionally clean, very friendly staff, good location for travellers or a city break ie: next to railway station, taxi rank, easy access for shopping in the city. Although we relocated to Cesme after 2 nights, it was nothing to do with the service provided at the hotel. No penalty costs incurred either.
Original description said 15 min walk to the beach - that's been amended now - it's a very busy port. Advised not to go out after 8pm (2 older females). On the 'downtown' side of Izmir, it was a bit unnerving being stared at and followed, but I am sure it would have been different if my husband had been with my mother and me.

We stayed two nights in hotel Baylan Basmane We had a spacious, modern and quiet room. Very clean with comfortable beds, a modern bathroom and a little vault. The hotel changes the bed sheets every day. The staff is very friendly and offered us twice a plate with fresh fruits. The breakfast was good with a rich choice. The hotel has a guarded parking.

the staff and people were extremely helpful. I had good food for breakfast with hot food options. 3. the hotel's central setting in the next street made it convenient. 4. It was not too far away from Adil Muftuoglu, where I ate a couple of times.

Nice entrance and friendly welcome, good size room which was of high standard. Breakfast and dinner could also be served in your room if requested or in the large courtyard garden which was very attractive considering it is in the middle of the city. Breakfast was good. Location right on Basmane rail station so close to all transport links. Overall very good and would stay again.

If we come to Izmir we will definately be staying there again, I can't recommend it highly enough.

My children and I stayed at the Hotel Baylan Basmane for the night before we took the train/ferry from Izmir to Istanbul. We had initially wanted to stay near the Alsancak train station since the Istanbul run is leaving from that station for the rest of 2010. However, the accommodations near that station did not get good safety reviews and as a woman traveling with teens, I needed a more secure area. Hotel Baylan fit the bill entirely. They have free parking and an English speaking staff. Be sure to check out the funky elevator built for one person!! The bathrooms are nice and modern and the location is good and will be better in 2011 since the Istanbul train will again route out of the Basmane station, which is very close to this hotel.
Since this is an up and coming area, many of the buildings are under renovation. This is typical in Izmir and did not concern our family. We actually liked being able to hear the men playing backgammon on the street below. However, if you are a traveler who needs a scenic view, ask for this on booking to avoid looking out onto the roof of another building. Also, note that some of the restaurants in the area have a tendency to bulk up the bill by bringing items you did not order and then adding those costs to your bill. Be firm and send back anything you did not order!
